Anyone who’s ever seen one of those „Making Of” specials on TV knows that filmmakers are masters of illusion, ingenuity, and special effects. Read on for the inside scoop on some of the tricks of the trade that went into making The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

The Pants Manifesto scene was filmed by placing the camera on a 360-degree dolly track around the girls. Unfortunately, it was virtually impossible for the camera to complete the circle around them without its own shadow being visible at some point in the scene (as the camera passed in front of the lights). Luckily, the visual effects people came to the rescue and „erased” the shadow from the shot.

Director Ken Kwapis never uses the traditional film command „Action!” to begin the actors’ performance on set. Instead he says, „Quiet, please, and um, uh, g’ahead.” This method is much more relaxed and allows the actors to begin at their own pace. However, he did get teased about it if someone even printed up bright orange T-shirts quoting him and handed them out to the crew!

Remember the scene in which Tibby and Bailey lie out in the park staring up at a sky full of stars and talking about life and death? Well, in reality that scene was shot inside on a soundstage. Parts of the movie were shot in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and shooting on the soundstage saved the actors and the crew from having to work outside in the cold, cold, cold Canadian night.

Less than a week before shooting was to begin, the people who owned the original choice of location for �Tibby�s house� decided they didn�t want a film crew inside their home after all. Sound like a serious problem? Not for these filmmakers! They quickly found a new location for the living room scenes and built Tibby�s bedroom on a soundstage.

Remember that gorgeous green grassy soccer field? Believe it or not, those scenes were shot in a desert in Cache Creek, Canada! (Yes, Canada has deserts!) The crew actually grew grass there. But naturally, in the middle of a desert, there was no water. So the crew put up a huge green screen in Cache Creek behind where they shot the soccer scenes and then shot footage of the ocean in Mexico. Presto�thanks to the talented visual effects people, the two shots became one!

One dramatic moment in the film happens when Kostos saves Lena from drowning. However, it proved too complicated to mount an underwater shooting unit in Greece for that scene. So while the above-the-water action was shot on location, the underwater sequence was filmed in a tank in Vancouver that is normally used for dive research. And go figure�the water in the tank in Canada was much warmer than the harbor in Greece.

Both Alexis Bledel and Blake Lively had extensions added to their already long and beautiful hair. Lena needed dark, thick, wavy hair; Bridget needed gorgeous waist-length blond hair. The hair extensions were put in in Los Angeles but needed to be tightened and maintained every two weeks in Vancouver. Alexis had hers removed at three a.m. on the day she finished filming because she had to start work on her TV show, The Gilmore Girls, the next day. However, Blake loved hers so much that she left them in for two months after filming! Meanwhile, Amber Tamblyn added her own blue streak to Tibby�s hair. She was scheduled to do a photo shoot for a magazine the day after she finished shooting and begin filming Joan of Arcadia a day after that, so she had to get her hair back to normal�fast. To accomplish that, she had to bleach out the blue and then redye her hair its original color.
